A tired blue-tiled ensuite in Chambers Flat, Logan, taken back to the frame and rebuilt as a terrazzo-look wet room in under four weeks. New framing, upgraded plumbing, a fully waterproofed floor graded to a central waste, a tiled bath hob and a warm timber vanity.

The ensuite
Same doorway, four weeks apart
Drag the handle to compare. The blue tiles, step-up bath and dated vanity made way for full-height terrazzo-look porcelain, a tiled bath hob and a timber vanity.
01 The starting point
A dated ensuite that worked against the room
The original ensuite had small blue wall tiles, a raised bath and shower platform and an old vanity with a laminate top. It was dark, cut up and hard to keep clean.
The brief was a bright, open ensuite with seamless finishes that would stay easy to maintain for years.
02 Strip-out and framing, 12 to 16 January
Back to the frame
The ensuite was disconnected and stripped right back to the studs and joists, with the rest of the house protected while the old tiles and fittings came out.
With everything open, the plumbing and electrical were roughed in and reconfigured, new wall framing went up and the walls were sheeted, ready for waterproofing.
03 Waterproofing and screed, 20 to 21 January
A wet room starts under the tiles
An open walk-in shower only works if the water goes where it should. The whole floor and the wet walls were waterproofed to Australian Standards, then screeded so the floor falls to a central waste.
The bath was set into a hob at the same time, so it could be tiled in the same finish as the walls.
04 Tiling and fit-off, 23 January to 5 February
One tile, floor to ceiling
Large-format terrazzo-look porcelain went across the floor and up every wall, including the bath hob, the recessed niche and the tiled in-wall ledges. Fewer grout lines, a bigger feeling room and less to clean.
The timber vanity, integrated basin, large frameless mirror and tapware went in during fit-off, the room was painted and cleaned, and the ensuite was handed over on 5 February.
