A heritage-listed split-level home in Bardon, Brisbane, lifted, built underneath and rebuilt inside while its original street façade stayed exactly as it was. The result is a five-bedroom family home with bright open living, a white Shaker-style kitchen and two levels of timber decking looking out over the creek reserve.

01 The brief
Keep the front, renew everything else
This split-level home in Bardon had a heritage-listed street façade, so every upgrade had to happen without changing the front of the house.
The brief was to bring a worn-down home up to today’s standard: more space, more light and a stronger connection to the creek reserve out the back, all behind a frontage that still looks the way the street remembers it.
02 Lifted and built under
A new level beneath the original house
The original structure was carefully lifted and a new level was built underneath it. Behind the retained façade, the interior was rebuilt with every element brand new.
An internal staircase now links the levels, crowned by a feature chandelier over the landing, and a wide entry leads through to the living areas.
03 Living and decks
Open living that steps out to the creek
The open-plan living and dining area runs straight out through sliding doors to a timber deck overlooking the creek reserve. The upper deck is enclosed with glass balustrading, so the treetop view stays open.
Below it, the lower deck has a built-in bench set into white slatted screening, giving the family two separate outdoor zones for relaxing and entertaining.
04 The kitchen
A white kitchen built for a crowd
The kitchen pairs white Shaker-style cabinetry with a long island that seats four, a slim linear pendant overhead and a window splashback that frames the greenery outside.
It opens straight onto the dining and lounge area, so whoever is cooking stays part of the conversation.
05 Bedrooms and bathrooms
Quiet bedrooms, considered bathrooms
The master suite has a walk-in robe lined with glass-fronted cabinetry and a dressing desk, plus its own powder room. Another bedroom has a custom window seat looking over the main street.
The bathrooms bring in patterned floor tiles, black vessel basins, a freestanding bath and vertical panelling behind the mirrors for texture.
