Shopfitting Dawg Boys Coorparoo

Dawg Boys took over a used restaurant tenancy in Coorparoo and needed it turned into a loud, black and red hot dog bar that people notice from the street. HEW Projects ran the full shopfit: strip-out, street front, counters, feature walls, lighting, floors, the commercial kitchen and the compliance sign-offs the centre needed before Dawg Boys could open the doors.

Built to the brand

The details that make Dawg Boys look like Dawg Boys

A red slat ceiling, red-lit feature wall, neon and pendants, polished concrete floors, outdoor dining under a red steel portal frame and an illuminated roundel on the street front. Every detail was built to the brand drawings.

The street front

From hoarding to hot dog bar

Drag the handle to compare. The road side of the shop went from temporary fencing and a tired facade to black cladding, a red steel portal frame and outdoor dining.

01 The starting point

A used restaurant, a brand that needed to shout

The shop had been fitted out for a previous restaurant: timber slat ceiling, woven pendant lights, timber window frames and a tiled base that had seen better days.

Dawg Boys’ brand is the opposite. Domino black, Hot Lips red, neon and big signage. The job was to keep what was worth keeping, strip the rest, and give the brand a shop that looks like it was built for it.

02 Strip-out and street front

Outside first, so the street saw progress

We started outside, behind hoarding, so the street front could be finished while work carried on inside.

The road side elevation was re-clad in black vertical cladding over the existing tiled base, with the tile line cut back clean where the two meet. Window frames were painted black and red, a red steel portal frame went up over the outdoor dining area, and the corner got a large illuminated Dawg Boys roundel and a street sign under the awning.

03 Counter, feature wall and ceiling

The inside, built around the brand drawings

The front counter was built and tiled in red mosaic with a black trim to each side. The rear wall became an acoustic feature wall: VJ board to the lower section, acoustic panels above, and red lit niches cut into it.

The existing slat ceiling was dropped, painted red and yellow to the brand drawings and re-hung over Domino black walls. Neon signage, track lights and pendants finished the dining room, with aluminium skirting all round.

The dining room

Bare shell to open for trade

The same room in June and at handover: polished concrete, the red mosaic counter, drinks fridges and a ceiling painted to the brand.

04 Floors and the commercial kitchen

Polished floors out front, a compliant kitchen out back

The dining floor was ground, polished and sealed. Behind the counter, the old kitchen units were removed, the floor was waterproofed and a new safety floor laid, then new stainless benches, a hand basin and services went in.

The plumbing inspection passed and the gas main was reconnected, ready for the Dawg Boys team to move in.

05 Compliance and handover

Two clients: the tenant and the centre

A shop in a managed centre answers to centre management as well as the tenant. We worked with centre management and their design consultant on every external detail, extended the access ramps to meet compliance with chequer plate finishes, and closed out the centre’s punch list.

The certifier and electrical certificates were in hand before trading, so Dawg Boys could open the doors.
